Nexus Athletics grows out of a recognition
of the potential impact a team experience can have on a child’s life.
With the right guidance, an athletic team is a microcosm for life in
Christian community. A community where individuals selflessly work
together for the common good; share and develop their gifts while
challenging others to do the same; and accept success with humility
while embracing failure as a learning experience.
For children who lack a strong adult role
model, a team experience offers the opportunity to develop a close
relationship with an adult coach who genuinely cares for them. A
coach who helps them develop self-confidence and a sense of
self-worth. A coach who challenges them to discover and develop their
gifts. A coach who does not let them quit on themselves.
At Nexus Athletics we emphasize a "play to
play" philosophy.
It is important for players and parents
to understand that our purpose is to help children develop their
spirit, minds and bodies. We work very hard at reaching our
potential as athletes and each player is held to high expectations of
improvement and effort. However, we “play to play” rather than
“play to win.” Our two goals at every practice and game are:
1)
to play as hard and as well as we are
capable, and
2) to enjoy the game.
In the end, we
believe that focusing on spirit, mind, and body better prepares
players for basketball and for life than a “win at all costs”
philosophy. Whether you win or
whether you lose, we believe playing should be fun.
